In our house, when the teens are feeling grumpy, uncommunicative or just ‘separate’, there’s one subject that’s always guaranteed to change the mood and start a conversation genuinely enjoyed by all – favourite movies, box sets or, if the situation is really bad, superpowers ranked by desirability* 😂
When we asked our lovely Instagram followers about this (we bring you only the most reliable, statistically significant research of course!) it seems we’re not alone. We got an overwhelming ‘yes’ to the theory that discussing what you’re all watching is one of the best ways of connecting with your teens. And in a world where we all feel the ‘screen time’ guilt, absolutely everyone who replied to another of our polls told us that watching together turns screen time into a total positive.
Don’t get me wrong – we discuss what’s happening out there, books, politics, the meaning of life as much as everyone. But what we’re watching or what we’ve loved to watch is always such fun to share, even if (in fact, especially if) we’re watching separately or aren’t all together in the same place.
For all you Big Bang Theory fans, here's an alternative way to start a conversation...
Sheldon: (Knock, knock, knock) Leonard? (Knock, knock, knock) Leonard? (Knock, knock, knock) Leonard?
Leonard: What is it?
Sheldon: I made tea.
Leonard: I don’t want tea.
Sheldon: I didn’t make tea for you. This is my tea.
Leonard: Then why are you telling me?
Sheldon: It’s a conversation starter.
Leonard: That’s a lousy conversation starter.
Sheldon: Oh, is it? We’re conversing. Checkmate
We've spent hours comparing our top 10 lists of favourite movies (split into categories, of course), discussing which series are best to re-watch, or watch in a certain mood, or act as a compatibility test. And don't get me started on Marvel v DC (sorry, DC).
So thank you, Stan Lee, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, 007, Chuck Lorre, the cast of Friends… these mums of teens are forever in your debt.
We will never pass up an opportunity to include a pic of RDJ 😍
