Remember when we were all moaning about how hard it was to squeeze in top quality family time?! At least now our teens are always around and it’s so much easier to tempt them into spending time with us.
While we love playing games as a family and doing other happy stuff together too, nothing beats a family movie night. Re-watching some of your favourites is a great way to bond with your teens. And it’s often an easy, embarrassment-free way into discussing controversial topics too.
We’ve put together a list of 10 movies that we think are perfect to watch with your teens. We’ve included favourites from our families, some of which are perfect for younger teens. We hope they inspire you to get popcorn and fleecy blankets at the ready, turn the fire on and snuggle down together…
The Blind Side (12)
A feel-good story beloved by lots of teen boys we know. The Blind Side tells the story of Michael, a homeless black teen who has drifted in and out of the school system for years. He’s taken in by a family who eventually become his legal guardians, transforming both his life and theirs and helping him realise his potential as a student and football player.
Legally Blonde (12)
Needs no introduction… Elle Woods is simply a feminist hero and has life lessons to teach us all.
The Lion King (PG)
The only animation that made it onto our older teens’ lists. A classic, whatever your age. Nostalgic fun for all the family.
Good Will Hunting (15)
Totally deserves its 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Will Hunting has a genius-level IQ but chooses to work as a janitor at MIT. When he solves a difficult maths problem, his talents are discovered by a professor who decides to help the misguided youth reach his potential. Another massive dose of inspiration, perfect for teens.
The Matrix (15)
Our Equipp reviewer says: “It shaped my interest in studying A-level philosophy, but it’s super action-packed and exciting too. So interesting and fun for all the family.” Plus we get to include a bonus pic of Keanu 🙂
Love Actually (15)
We know it divides opinion but it’s beloved in both our households. Many happy hours have been spent talking about which of the couples’ story is the best…
Not one you’d find on everyone’s list but a cult classic and certainly one that will start discussion! Teen Sarah journeys through a maze to recover her baby brother from a goblin king, played by David Bowie in his own inimitable way. Takes us instantly back to our own teenage years…
Forrest Gump (12)
Another choice that pretty much adds itself to the list. Six Oscars, lots of truly famous movie moments, Tom Hanks…
- The Peanut Butter Falcon (12A)
Our teen says: “A film about companionship that makes you reassess things that you take for granted or can overlook.” If this isn’t one you’ve watched before, put it straight to the top of the list. The very definition of a feel-good family movie.
The Hunger Games (12A)
Another of our Equipp reviewers: “A good old fashioned underdog story about an evil government suppressing its subjects (much like governments we see today…). Secretly political but a love story and fight scenes throughout, so perfect for everyone.”
We hope at least one on our list of top 10 movies to watch with your teens has inspired you to organise your own family movie night – if so, we’d love to hear from you! What did your teens think of these movies? And what would be your top recommendation for a family movie night? Leave us a comment and let us know.
